Oriflama
Flama de Oro, S.A.

The Project: Flama de Oro, or Oriflama, is a 190-hectare polyculture family farm located in Guatemala in the Mesoamerica biodiversity hotspot. Operating for more than 79 years, this farm’s production system is a model for conservation-oriented coffee production in Guatemala, and as result, has received numerous awards and certifications including Rainforest Alliance Certification.

The Deal: In November 2005, Verde Ventures provided a loan of $100,000 to Oriflama for working capital for the 2005-2006 coffee harvest, as well as for soil conservation efforts and reforestation with native trees.

The Benefit to Conservation: Oriflama’s efforts to improve on-farm productivity and land restoration efforts will contribute to the protection of bird species such as highland guan (Penelopina nigra), quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), and Endangered horned guan (Oreophasis derbianus), as well as numerous migratory birds found on the farm. The reforestation of native tree species will ensure the consolidation of a corridor between Oriflama and adjacent farms and strengthen the protection of the Occidental Volcanic Mountain Range of Guatemala. Additionally, Oriflama’s staff trains the local community in farm management techniques that contribute to biodiversity. Oriflama's staff also enforces a strict ban on hunting and patrols the farm regularly to prevent poaching.
