Everyone's actions, individually or collectively through society, incur ecological impacts. We consume natural resources, release pollutants and generate waste. These impacts are referred to as "ecological footprints."

Saving the planet is a big job. You can help by incorporating a few simple actions into your everyday life. You can change our world for the better – for today and for generations to come. Being a conservationist has never been easier!

At Home

  1. Recycle paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, Styrofoam, and anything else your community will accept.
  2. Conserve energy by turning off lights when you leave the room.
  3. Reuse food storage containers; avoid single-use containers.
  4. Conserve water by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth. Fill the sink to do dishes instead of running the water.
  5. Turn down the heat: lower your thermostat, and set your water heater to 130 degrees F.

In the Car

  1. Keep your car tuned up for better fuel efficiency.
  2. Keep your tires properly inflated to increase miles per gallon.
  3. Recycle your engine oil and car batteries. Your repair shop may do this.
  4. Use alternate transportation such as a bicycle, public transportation, or start a car-pool.
  5. Consider purchasing a more fuel-efficient car, a hybrid, or one that uses alternative fuel.

At the Office
  1. Recycle office paper and cardboard.
  2. Set your computer and printer to print on both sides of the paper. Set your computer to power down when not in use.
  3. Consider sending documents for review electronically.
  4. Reuse manila envelopes, folders, and other office supplies.
  5. Use washable coffee mugs.

While Traveling

  1. Consider ecotourism destinations for your vacations.
  2. Travel on trains instead of planes for short distances.
  3. Choose the most direct route possible when not cost-prohibitive.
  4. Consider teleconferences as an alternative to business travel.
  5. When visiting outdoor destinations, remember: Take only pictures, leave only footprints.
