Meeting a Critical Need The expansion of mining, and oil and gas development into some of the world's most remote and undeveloped ecosystems promises tremendous economic opportunities for both companies and host governments. At the same time, this trend brings with it serious risks to the high levels of biodiversity found in many areas that are also rich in minerals, oil and gas. Opportunity We are working with leading corporations in the energy and mining sectors to minimize the impact of industry on biodiversity and maximize opportunities for companies to contribute to biodiversity conservation. Listed below are highlights of some of our most recent developments. Alcoa in Northwest Guinea We are working with Alcoa, the world’s leading producer of primary aluminum to implement an important conservation tool known at Initial Biodiversity Assessment and Planning (IBAP). Through this science-based approach, CI, in close coordination with local partner Guinée Ecologie, will assess the region’s biodiversity as well as the existing and potential socio-economic threats to and opportunities for conservation in northwest Guinea. more Anglo American in South Africa We are working with the Botanical Society of South Africa, Anglo Base Metals, a division of the Anglo American Group, and local partners to support the creation of the Bushmanland Conservation Initiative and the development of a regional conservation planning process in South Africa's Succulent Karoo. more BG Group plc - Photography & Conservation Demonstrating how the power of photography can be harnessed as a critical tool for protecting the environment, BG Group plc and Conservation International (CI) have launched the Conservation through Photography Alliance. more The Business & Biodiversity Offset Program The Business and Biodiversity Offset Program (BBOP), managed by Conservation International and Forest Trends, is a partnership of companies, scientists, and government agencies to pilot projects which compensate for the residual, unavoidable harm to biodiversity caused by major development projects. more Energy & Biodiversity Initiative (EBI) Convened by CELB, the EBI is a group of five conservation organizations and four major energy companies working to integrate biodiversity conservation into oil and gas development. more |
