MAHLETTE BETRE
Manager, Energy & Mining Program

Education:
Queens University: BScH, Environmental Biology
York University: MES, Environmental Studies - Ecosystem Health

As a manager in the Energy and Mining Program for Conservation International's Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB), Mahlette engages with several oil, gas and mining companies to address biodiversity conservation issues at both corporate and project site levels.

Mahlette manages the partnership with Newmont Mining Corporation, which is focused on ensuring that biodiversity conservation becomes integrated into their decision making processes, and into the design and management of their projects worldwide. She also works on the Business and Biodiversity Offsets Program, a partnership of companies, government agencies, and NGOs exploring the use of biodiversity offsets as conservation mechanisms that can help achieve better and more cost-effective conservation outcomes than normally occur in infrastructure development. Mahlette is working on the design and implementation of offsets for one of the pilot projects in Ghana. In addition she manages the Energy and Biodiversity Initiative (EBI), a global-level initiative that integrates biodiversity conservation into oil and gas development.

Prior to joining CI, Mahlette worked in the environmental consulting field advising government agencies on how to develop and implement environmental management systems based on the ISO 14001 Standard.
