ASSHETON L. STEWART CARTER, Ph.D. Senior Director, Strategic Planning Education: Royal Agricultural College, U.K.: B.S., International Management and Agriculture University of Bath, U.K.: Ph.D., Business and Society Studies As Director of the Energy & Mining program at Conservation International's Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB), Assheton Carter collaborates closely with oil, gas and mining industries, as well as with conservation groups, development agencies, governments and community leaders, to develop and implement practices that minimize impacts on sensitive ecosystems and contribute to conservation. The program is developing a variety of tools and approaches for integrating conservation into natural resource development, including metrics for measuring the net impact of development on sensitive ecosystems, methodologies for evaluating biodiversity in and around mineral development projects, and a risk-based decision-making framework for deciding whether or not some areas should be off limits for development. Prior to joining Conservation International, Assheton was a Research Fellow at the Warwick Business School in the United Kingdom, where he managed projects and specifications for environmental and social performance indicators for the mining and energy sectors. Assheton trained in and practiced portfolio management and company share placement in a leading financial house in London and has held various management positions across sectors and national borders. |
