Oct. 5, 2007 Collaboration to Protect the Maya Mountains Partnerships spanning the border between Belize and Guatemala, as well as between governments and local nonprofits, are helping to better manage and protect Chiquibul National Park. Containing some of the most intact forests in Northern Mesoamerica, the park was threatened by the illegal harvest of ornamental plants. Sept. 4, 2007 Based on input from a Succulent Karoo Ecosystem Programme community participation meeting, the Namaqualand Restoration Initiative is helping replant mined areas across the Succulent Karoo Hotspot. The project relies on input from local experts and engagement of Namaqualanders. July 2, 2007 With assistance from a nonprofit organization supported by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, residents of an Armenian village are protecting and restoring their forests and managing their natural resources better. Their tree-planting efforts are also serving as a model for sustainable forestry across the Caucasus Hotspot. May 4, 2007 Communities See Brighter Future on Wings of a Butterfly With support from the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology provided training to more than 200 people in a sustainable livelihoods program for communities living near threatened forests at three priority sites in the Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests of Tanzania and Kenya region. March 30, 2007 Protecting the Plants of Madagascar Most often known for its exotic fauna, Madagascar also features nearly 12,000 plant species that are chiefly threatened by unsustainable natural resource management practices. Working with partners, the Missouri Botanical Garden is helping to solve this problem by raising the profile of plant conservation across the hotspot. March 16, 2007 With support from the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, Instituto Cidade is engaging local farmers, landowners,and community officials to develop a regional environmental action network in the Rio Caraíva watershed in the Central and Serra do Mar biodiversity corridors of the Atlantic Forest Hotspot. Feb. 2, 2007 Key to Park Protection Involves Good Neighbors Costa Rica's National Parks Foundation is bringing together diverse partners to protect the buffer zone of La Amistad International Park in the southern region of the Mesoamerica Hotspot. The project focuses on training officials to more effectively deal with threats to the park, and engaging communities in collaborative efforts. Jan. 5, 2007 Although the Philippine crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis) continues to be the most severely threatened crocodile species in the world, support from CEPF has helped a conservation group work with local communities in the Philippines Hotspot to bring it back from the brink of extinction.
