Our Strategy

The hotspots approach to the conservation of ecosystems is a highly targeted strategy for tackling the challenge of biodiversity loss at the global level.

As many hotspots cross national borders, the approach transcends political boundaries and fosters coordination and joint efforts across large landscapes for local and global benefits.

A Strategic Framework sets the 5-year strategy for our global program beginning in July 2007.

At the hotspot level, strategy development with a rich mix of partners is a unique part of our approach.

The process is led by civil society groups and includes diverse stakeholders to develop a shared strategy from the outset.

The strategy—a key part of the ecosystem profile developed for each hotspot—guides the award of all grants.

The CEPF Donor Council has approved 18 ecosystem profiles to date:
