Mexico

In Mexico, we are working with coffee producers in the area around El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas. The Reserve, located in the Sierra Madre Mountains, is one of the most pristine and diverse natural areas remaining in Mexico. The region is one of the last major refuges for the critically endangered quetzal and jaguar, and is also home to the puma, ocelot, horned guan and azure-rumped tanager.

Threats
The boundaries of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve are under great pressure, as local inhabitants, who are increasingly dependent on the land, seek to expand and intensify their activities. Decreasing land security, diminishing crop yields and increasing populations force communities to work on larger plantations and in urban industrial centers. This move away from traditional farming, particularly "shade coffee," threatens the ecological integrity of the biosphere.

Project
Starbucks partnership
In partnership with Starbucks Coffee Company, CI's Coffee Program promotes ecologically sensitive coffee production in the coffee producing communities located in and around the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve. To date, 1,018 farmers have been incorporated into the program, and 3,152 hectares of coffee farms have been placed under conservation management. more
