The 20th century saw the emergence of the private sector as a global force, helping to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding population. But these economic gains have come at a price for the natural world around us. Today, the world's forests, wetlands, coral reefs and other vital ecosystems are in critical condition. Pollution, wasteful use of natural resources, and climate change threaten natural habitats and human livelihoods. To help address these threats, the Center has identified three broad priorities for strategic focus:
BIODIVERSITY
The Center is working to transform the impact that key industries have on critical ecosystems by reducing their contribution to habitat loss and pollution and by boosting their contribution to conservation. The Center engages key industries that have the greatest impact on critical ecosystems and those with the greatest potential to promote positive change.
AGRICULTURE & FISHERIES
FORESTRY
ENERGY & MINING
TRAVEL & LEISURE
WATER
The Center is encouraging large industrial and agricultural water users to employ best practices and to promote public policies that conserve water, enhance water quality, and protect watersheds.
CLIMATE CHANGE
The Center is engaging industry in limiting the build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by reducing industry's own emissions, and by offsetting emissions through forest conservation, renewable energy, and energy efficient projects.
