As a traveler, you will have an effect on the environment and culture of the places you are visiting. Here are some rules of thumb to make this effect positive! Keep These Golden Rules in Mind When You Travel:
- Learn about your destination before you get there. Read guidebooks and travel articles, and pay particular attention to customs such as greetings, appropriate dress, eating behaviors, and so forth.
- Follow established guidelines. Stay on trails, pack up your trash, and remain set distances away from wildlife to minimize your effect in sensitive areas.
- Seek out and support locally owned businesses. Buy locally to ensure maximum community benefit.

Chalalán Ecolodge is nestled in the heart of Madidi National Park, which is deep in the Bolivian Amazon. A short flight from Bolivia’s capital, La Paz, to Rurrenabaque followed by a canoe trip up the gleaming Beni and Tuichi Rivers takes tourists to Chalalán Ecolodge. The area is a pristine tropical rainforest—a conservation priority because of its diverse ecosystems and rich biodiversity. Within the 300,000-hectare region surrounding the ecolodge live several endangered species, including the Harpy eagle, chinchilla, giant otter, and spectacled bear.
